Then and Now
It is remarkable how after 83 years, some things in Mastic Beach are pretty much the same. In 1936, concerns about the roads, the waterfront, and how to keep the children busy were on top of the list. Fundraising was, as always, number one. The west end fire department of Mastic Beach had just collected $16.00, which gave them a total of $66.00 in their bank account.
Swimming beaches also presented a problem, with safety and maintenance the main concerns. The MBPOA came into being under the able guidance of the late Mortimer Wohl, its first President, in 1928. It was organized as a civic association, and incorporated in 1929. One purpose of the organization was, and remains, to encourage and promote action by the property owners and residents of Mastic Beach in the improvement and general welfare of the community.
